Playstation 3 Review - Does It Rock Or Does It Suck? My PS3 Review
By Gary.L | December 13, 2007
The Playstation 3 has been in town for many months now, but does it really tick all the boxes for a next generation console?
Before I start this Playstation 3 review I wan’t to let all you know that I am in no way biased towards Sony when writting this, I am also a massive Xbox 360 fan and have owned 3 Xbox 360 consoles within this year alone… Don’t ask why! heh.
Though I will focus this review not only on the good points of the playstation 3 but also on the bad points and also the differences between Microsofts Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.
Let’s start of with the good things with the Playstation 3, what makes it stand out from the crowed. Even though the Playstation 3 was late its still a mighty machine, it may be big but the Playstatio 3 is pretty quiet and does not make hardly any noise at all when running at full throttle!
When I first got my Playstation 3 back in September I was like a little kid excited and ready to explode, my first thoughts was to get it out of its box and whack it in to my 32inc Samsung LCD Tv. The entire set up of the Playstation 3 was very simple, I am lucky, I own a PSP and the Playstation 3 uses the exact same menu navigation so I knew where to go to set up the Playstation 3.
Even if your new to the way Sony layout their menu it won’t take you long to learn, its every simple and basic which is great as no one wants to play about trying to figure how to put a game on or play a movie.
There are many options in the Playstation 3, you can set your PS3 to start games straighta way or set them to play when you want them to play after you have insurted the disk. It’s endless, you can have different themes to jazz up your background and menu icons and you can also set up your PS3 to connect to the Internet via wireless or through an Ethernet connection. Which brings me to my next part, is setting up the Internet easy?
Well, the Internet set up aint as easy as one would like, I mean for me it’s ok but for some one with hardly any knowledge when it comes to wireless set up and Ethernet set up they might get confused. Though if you own a plug and play router then the PS3 will set up the connection through a simple wizard, but be warned, if you had some one set up your Internet router for you and they have set it up differently to the normal standards then you will encounter problems.
The Playstation 3 also comes with 4 USB slots on the front, its designed for you to set up the wireless controllers but you can also plug in a USB memory stick to run saved games that can be downloaded from the Internet.
Their is also memory slots to add other memory cards in to the Playstation 3 allowing you to upload your images from your camra to save as a background or to show your friend and family, if you have it set up for HDTv then this is fantastic since the picture quality is fantastic!
Then there is the Blu-Ray drive, its probably the best Blu-ray player on the market and plays films with ease, but if you have never seen blu-ray played then you are missing out! HDTv is the next big thing and playing games on blu-ray is fantastic, its the plus point for me as it makes the PS3 an all out entertainment system which its rivals (Aka Xbox 360) lacks.
But what’s the bad points to the playstation 3?
It’s big lump, it seems every new console that comes out gets bigger and bigger, but the Playstation 3 wins hands down when it comes to size, it may be a silky black shining beast but if you struggle for space then you will struggle.
The next is the price, it may only be £299 in the UK right now but thats on it’s own and also a down graded version of the Playstation 3, when it was first released you was looking at around £400 for the console. This is madness as the Playstation is supposed to be a gaming console for all people, I doubt the average family could afford to spend that kind of money without any problems.
This is what has dented Sonys sales within the last 4 months since its release, Sony gambled and thought by showing of weird adverts and also having dominated the last two console wars they thought they had the upper hand…
Sadly they was wrong and not many consoles have shipped out, the console also had a lack of games and the ones that had come out was all converts from the Xbox 360. Not only that, even though the Xbox 360 had been out way over a year longer then the PS3 the games that had come out for the PS3 looked better on the Xbox 360. This is was not good for Sony and they had to do something about it.
Lucky for me and other PS3 owners Sony have now pulled their finger out and a load more games have hit the market, though the big name games have yet to hit the shelfs. Most blame for this is due to the complex way the games have to be programme for the PS3 where the Xbox 360 its a lot easy for developers to create games. This is a big reason why the Xbox 360 and PC get the games first before the PS3.
The good news though is sales up on the increase for sony and they have doubled their sales since dropping prices and bringing out a new version of the console (Don’t worry, if you own a 60gb version you are lucky) as they have now discontinued the 60gb version.
In Japan they have currently released an 80gb version of the system, this system will sadly not be making its way over to Europe meaning we are stuck with the 40gb version of the console, though it is possible to do a manual upgrade by replacing the current hard disk with another from your local computer hardware store, though please read up more on this before attempting and get advice from a some one who knows what they are doing.
That’s about it when it comes to the negitives but what about its competitors?
The PS3 looks great but so does the Xbox 360, but why? The Playstation 3 should be away ahead when it comes graphics and FPS (Frames Per Second) but sadly its not, but the reason for this is that developers struggle with the programming of the games for the Playstation 3, take for example Fight Night Rnd 3, it looked great on the Xbox 360 but the converted version to the PS3 lacked loads of effects which the Xbox 360 used.
Even though it’s said that the latest games for the PS3 only uses 15% to 20% of the raw power of the PS3 it then amazes on why the Xbox 360 still out performes it. Now, be warned, you may see many reviews stating the PS3 games look loads better then the Xbox 360 but I feel these are articles focused on selling the PS3 and not really giving it an honest review.
See for your self, hit up Youtube and type “Playstation 3 vs Xbox 360″ and you will find many clips showing the difference between the two.
Don’t worry though, soon as the developers get a hang of the programming software for the PS3 we will then see some amazing games which the Xbox 360 won’t be able to touch due to the lack of power.

Rocks in my opinion, if your in two minds about choosing a console. Choose a ps3 one for the future, as it plays Blue-ray.
