What is a reasonable resale price for the Sony Playstation 3?

Playstation 3
supercute_inc asked:

My boyfriend really wants a Playstation 3 so I was planning on buying him one on Ebay when it’s released on Nov. 17. I don’t want to risk waiting inn line forever and coming up empty handed, especially since I’d have to take off work to do so. Rumor is that bids will be start at $1000.00, which I’m reluctantly willing to pay because I know it means so much to him and let’s just say that he deserves the happiness (he’s had a rough year). I’m just wondering if there is anyone else planning on spending a small fortune on a PS3? It would make me feel better if I knew I wasn’t the the only one…

don’t do that idiot! go reserve one in a game store, the selling price is 600 and even that is already NOT worth it…

I make $27 an hour and have 6 grand saved up and I dedicate my life to video games and computers. I am using a 6-7 thousand dollar PC not including the monitor and I still would not spend 1000 on the PS3. Many reasons it will be cheaper to buy in stores. NEVER buy the first few frame-wears. The PSone and two were buggy when they were first released. If you wait 6 months to 2 years before buying not only will you save money but you will get a more stable system.

But if you want it really fast I suggest getting it offline. You can at least wait 1-12 weeks if its not in stock. You will save a lot more money offline and depending were you buy it like wal-mart if there is a problem you can return it within 90 days or so without any problems.

Reserve it if you can! The rumored bid may be $1000.00 but if the demand is high you could be forking out a ton more. The best thing to do (learned from experience) is to wait for the first few shipments to come in before you rush out to buy it. any kinks in the system should be fixed by then, and your not out $600.00 on a buggy system.

I have seen the PS3 pre-orders going for over $1200 already. So, I would **** to see what they will be going for once they are sold out and before Christmas! (Although, I did notice that ebay for some reason has removed all PS3 listings. Probably for safety against scammers). I am planning to get as many as I can. You can add me to your list and if i get a bunch I will sell you one without the hassle of bidding. I plan am not sure how much i will sell for, but I might sell you one for a $1000. I am planning on selling each one w/ a game for around $1200. We’ll see how much people are willing to pay! My yahoo id is matix92870. Add me and send me a message.

The preorder units are all sold out unfortunately. You can check the actual resale prices now on eBay from sellers who have reserved a unit, using the “Completed listings” search (link below). The reason some ads were removed by eBay was because auction items have to be available in one month, I think, which is no longer an issue. Many of the current completed prices are between $1000 to $2000, which is probably what you can expect to pay to get one on launch day without waiting in line. I do think $2000 is too high, but $1000 may be considered reasonable due to rarity. To avoid the hassles of bidding, you can try Buy-It-Now auctions, though you may have to pay a higher price.

There are two versions of PS3, and the price should be slightly lower if you shop for one with the 20gb harddrive instead of the 60gb, Premium version. Note however that the 20gb version will not have built-in wireless internet (Wi-Fi) and flash card reader like the 60gb version does. These features can still be added later as accessories, so keep your options open.

I was fortunate enough to have secured one PS3 on launch day, the Premium version, by lining up for the pre-order. Before the mall opened, there were multiple lines of people at various entrances, waiting to rush toward the game retailer, an Electronic Boutique in the mall. Some people even asked the security guard for tips on which entrance would open first, but luck still played a large part. In the end, only 8 people at that location, out of many dozens, were able to place a preorder. As you can see, receiving a unit next month will be rather special, and the memory will be for the ages. Assuming I receive my PS3 as reserved, I definitely would not sell it without a large premium. Instead I would be playing it with those around me.

If you don’t get the PS3, also consider getting your boyfriend a Wii. It will be cheaper and more widely available, judging by preorder numbers.

    Happy hunting.
